It’s time for the 8th annual Tempe Writing Contest & Cover Design Contest sponsored by Tempe Public Library, Arizona State University, and The Friends of the Tempe Public Library. The submissions are open now until February 14.

Who can enter? The contest is open to High School students, College students, and adults in the Phoenix area.

What are the submission guidelines?

Poetry – a poem up to 100 lines

Fiction – a short story up to 3500 words

Creative Nonfiction – a work of creative nonfiction up to 3500 words (including essay, memoir, and literary journalism?

Learn more about eligibility, submission guidelines, and cover design specifications on the Tempe Writing Contest website. Winners will be announced on March 12 and the winning entries will be published in print and online on the Tempe Public Library website.

Library Writer-in-Residence

The Writers-in-Residence program promotes writing in communities by connecting local, professional authors to serve as Writers-in-Residence at local libraries. Writers-in-Residence spend time at the library during their residency composing new works and providing education for community members. 

Get expert advice on your writing by registering for a one-on-one consultation, or attend a writing workshop to learn new skills in the craft of writing and publishing. All experience levels are welcome.

2019 Writer-in-Residence: Betty Webb, May – July 2019

Betty Webb is the author of the nationally best-selling Lena Jones mystery series (Desert Vengeance, Desert Rage, Desert Wives, Desert Noir, Desert Wind, etc.) and the humorous Gunn Zoo mysteries (The Otter of Death, The Llama of Death, The Puffin of Death, etc.). Before beginning to write full time, Betty worked as a journalist, interviewing everyone from U.S. presidents, astronauts who walked on the moon, Nobel Prize-winners, and polygamy runaways. She has taught creative writing classes and workshops at Arizona State University and Phoenix College, has been a nationally-syndicated literary critic for 30 years, and is currently reviewing for Mystery Scene Magazine. In addition to other organizations, Betty is a member of the National Federation of Press Women, Mystery Writers of America, and Sisters in Crime.

A well-rounded character is critical for believability. All fiction requires some a level of suspension of disbelief, but “real” characters make the plot, and ultimately the story, more believable. This workshop will explore a variety of methods for creating multi-faceted, compelling characters who won’t fall flat.

Tempe Writing & Cover Design Contest 2019

ASU students from all majors and campuses in metropolitan Phoenix (including ASU Online students who reside in Maricopa County) are invited to submit their creative work in the 5th annual Tempe Writing and Cover Design contest.

The contest will accept entries from Jan. 7 – Feb. 18, 2019. Writers may submit one original, unpublished work in either poetry, short fiction or creative nonfiction (including essays and memoir). Entries are read anonymously by members of ASU’s creative writing community and a winner is chosen in each genre for the three entry categories: high school student, college student (undergraduate or graduate) and community adult.

Graphic artists (age 14 and above) are invited to prepare a color cover design for the 2019 issue of Tempe Writers Forum, the publication that shares the winning entries.

Contest winners — in addition to having their work published in volume five of the Tempe Writers Forum and on the library’s website — will be celebrated at a reception at the Tempe Public Library on Wednesday, April 3, 2019. Additionally, the Friends of the Tempe Library will award a $50 prize to all winners.
