Four Photographs by Emily Matyas

Emily Matyas

Emily Matyas

Emily Matyas expresses her interest in society through photography. She began as a magazine journalist, and later worked for a non-profit in Mexico. She received her MFA in photography from Arizona State University in 2002. In her recent work, she explores issues of cultural identity and women’s roles by photographing herself as her grandmother in Romania. She presents the awkward view of being from a culture but not a part of it. She has taught photography at the college level and youth workshops. Her work is exhibited widely and collected by organizations including The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
